A registered apprenticeship offers numerous benefits to both employers and jobseekers. They receive most of their training on-the-job, while working for an employer who pays a good living wage. The employment is the primary requirement for an apprenticeship - a job must exist for the apprentice to be trained. Apprentices also learn a portion of their skills in a classroom. The classroom instruction is usually provided by experienced tradesman.

Youth Apprenticeship (YA) is a strategy in which employers hire high school juniors or seniors for a one or two-year apprenticeship. During the apprenticeship, the student will continue taking classes at their high school while working as an apprentice at a participating business.
